Riddled with bizarre errors and factual inconsistencies.

This is a direct quote from the book: "The Aztec goddess of death is Mictecacihuatl or Mictlantecuhtli who is represented as a skull or a full skeleton." Well, a simple Google search would reveal that the former is in fact the queen of Mictlan and lady of the underworld, while the latter is her brother, the god of the underworld. I understand that this may be a, uh, *simplified* overview of the practices involving Santa Muerte, but ... oh wow. It also implies that the Spaniards after their arrival in the 10th century (!) adopted a Day of the Dead-like festival whose purpose was to "remind the living of the dangers of not remaining faithful to the Christian god." Didn't Christopher Columbus arrive in the New World in 1492 during an expedition funded by the Spanish Crown? Why'd Isabella spend so much money if they were already here? The author also says the shrine at Tepito was erected on Halloween in 2001. That would be a surprise to the family who runs the shrine and has done so since 1962, 39 years before the author claims it was built. Her further claim that Santa Muerte is like just like Athena because they share an owl symbol is ridiculous. One is a goddess of wisdom and just warfare. The other is the protectress of those on the fringes of society, particularly those go about at night - prostitutes, late night waitresses, service workers, the police and drug dealers (this is how she got labeled as a narco-saint.) These two spirits sharing an owl symbol makes them in no way similar, just like my wearing a blue shirt doesn't make me a Smurf. Her occult knowledge is likewise deeply flawed. The rituals aren't bad, I guess, presented as a bunch of novenas and some Catholic nonsense coupled with some basic folk magic spells like reading an egg yolk in a glass of water and magic bath formulas with a somewhat Santa Muerte twist. They're not really inspired and look like they would fit in any common Wicca book.

This is Pure Garbage - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS AUTHOR! If I could give a lower rating, I would. This book DOES NOT accurately reflect the veneration or history of La Santa Muerte! In fact, the biggest warning is in the title itself: the author says "Santa Muerte" instead of "La Santa Muerte," as she is known by her followers and the people of Mexico and the Southwestern United States!
This is easily one of the shoddiest sources on La Santa Muerte I have ever come across, which is saying something considering that my Master's thesis focused on curanderismo and syncretic practices and ideas in Mexico, including La Santa Muerte. I am also a curandero and a devotee of La Ni�a Blanca, which makes this book all the more insulting: to my intelligence as a scholar and to my faith as a practitioner.
Prior posts have outlined numerous mistakes the author makes when talking about La Santa Muerte and her origins, but I had to highlight perhaps the most egregious and ridiculous one yet: on page 6, the author states that "one of the common misconceptions [about La Santa Muerte] is that she must have African or Afro-Caribbean origins...despite the fact that Mexico never engaged in the African slave trade. Consequently, most Mexicans have no direct relationship ethnically, culturally or racially with Africa. There are no African or Afro-Caribbean influences on Santa Muerte's origins."
This is akin to saying that South Carolina or Louisiana never engaged in the African slave trade. It is absolutely, quantifiably, profoundly incorrect. Mexico had the second largest black slave population in the Western Hemisphere (after Brazil) and the single largest free black population; in fact, blacks outnumbered whites in Mexico until after 1810 (for starters, see Bennett's "Africans in Colonial Mexico: Absolutism, Christianity, and Afro-Creole Consciousness, 1570-1640", Bristol's "Christians, Blasphemers, and Witches: Afro-Mexican Ritual Practice in the Seventeenth Century", and Vinson & Restall's "Black Mexico: Race and Society from Colonial to Modern Times"). If a piece of information this major was overlooked, imagine what else in this book is downright incorrect!
Overall, this book shows a truly appalling lack of research, cultural knowledge, and competency. It does not accurately reflect the veneration of La Santa Muerte historically or currently in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. Instead, it would appear that the (apparently non-Mexican or -Hispanic/Latina) author is simply jumping on the bandwagon of cultural appropriation and capitalizing on the ignorance and morbid curiosity surrounding La Santa Muerte...both of which are fostered by media and books exactly like this. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.
If you want real sources about La Santa Muerte and her veneration, please check out "Devoted to Death" by Andrew Chesnut, "La Biblia de la Santa Muerte" by Skullduggery Emporium, or the upcoming (but not yet published) Doctoral dissertation by Eric Breault of Arizona State University.

The Lady of Death and Life

I had seen statutes of this saint before and heard a tiny bit about her and was intrigued enough to give this book a try. Its a slim volume, but well worth it. It covers the background of Santa Muerte, including speculation that she has much more to do with pagan beliefs from Europe mingled with South American native beliefs and Goddesses (which makes sense, then, why the Catholic Church would be against actually approving her as a saint), and what aspects of life and death she has power and influence over and so can work to your safety, health, and prosperity.
The author retells some of the stories about Santa Muerte has appeared to people (a lady in white normally, white being the color of mourning and death in the cultures she springs from), plus how you can associate her with other colors depending upon what you need help with...from romance to legal battles to danger and so on. She gives a color guide to use with her, objects commonly associated with Santa Muerte, some of this saint's other titles/names, and what kind of offerings to make.
The book also tells you how you can set up your own altar and/or shrine to Santa Muerte, including that its best to make it personal to your relationship with her and to keep it hidden from the eyes of others if you want your prayers to work the best with her. She has both more Christian and more pagan versions of some prayers and also explains the Catholic nuances for those reading the book who have no Catholic background to draw upon, such as the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary and using the rosary. Even with that, this is a very pagan friendly book, one that definitely leans towards the pagan and native roots of this saint and makes it quite easy to see her as a Goddess rather than a saint. Especially since she is clearly based upon older native Goddesses and belief systems.
For someone interested in exploring this saint/Goddess, I would recommend this book. If you want to go further than that and invest in building a relationship with this saint/Goddess, this book gives very clear steps as to how to do that, including what will be expected on your side of things to undertake a strong devotional interaction that will prove beneficial to you both.
