Why the hell can't chicks be more like guys?
That question plagues high school senior Sam Cruz. Sam is perfectly happy being a player. He just wishes girls wouldn't change the game from sex to relationships. It makes him look like an ass. But when Sam's best friend, Ally Klinger, gets dumped, she begs him to transform her into someone who can screw around then screw off. No risk of heartbreak that way. It's Sam's chance to create the perfect female AND cheer up his best friend. Armed with Sam's Three Step Guide to Backseat Success, Ally gets the game better than Sam thought she would and before long, Sam has his wish: the female version of himself. Too bad it's driving him nuts. Told from Sam's and Ally's alternating POVs, Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls is a fast-paced YA romantic comedy that follows these teens as they navigate the minefield of sex, love, and friendship. This contemporary teen romance contains strong language, drinking, euphemisms, and "bow chicka wow wow."

A refreshingly honest take on YA
By Tabitha @ Bows & Bullets Reviews
Ally just got dumped by her boyfriend of two years and is ready to get over it. So instead of moping around the house eating ice cream and wearing pajama's all day, she asks her best friend Sam to teach her his patented technique for "screwing around and then screwing off." No more serious relationships, just a series of one night stands where all parties leave satisfied. This, she decides, is the best way to avoid getting dumped for another girl ever again. But what happens when she starts to having feelings for one of the one night standers? For this to all work, Sam decides she'll need a makeover, but then he realizes tha this brainy BFF is hot and can't help by be turned on by her.
This book gets 5 stars if only just for the blunt manner in which it is written. It is very rare to read a YA book that talks about teens having sex. More than that, teens having a lot of sex without any real guilt attached to that idea. Or, even more than that, about a female teen character who actually wants sex without strings. Most adult writers are appalled by this idea. Hormone filled teens actually want to have sex?!?!
Finally an author who doesn't hide behind religious or the mythical idea of morally good or bad and is just honest about it. I absolutely loved it. I loved watching Allie transform under Sam's tutelage and then seeing her take that knowledge and decide exactly what was right for her. I loved the way it ended as well. I think anyone who picks it up can tell right from the beginning where it is going and that was the perfect place for the story to end. I loved the whole thing, especially the makeover bits.
That being said, I know plenty of people who would absolutely despise it. Fair warning to anyone picking up this novel, it contains cursing and discusses sex explicitly. I happened to find it refreshing, but like everything else, it isn't for everyone. If these things don't bother you and you are looking for a more honest take on teen relationships, please read this novel. It's laugh out loud funny with a heartfelt storyline underneath.

A review from Bookworm1858

Synopsis: After getting her heart broken, Ally decides to be more like a guy, more like her best friend Sam Cruz and pursue her physical gratification without all those emotions getting in the way. For his part, Sam is thrilled to groom Ally, striking a blow for guys everywhere. But when the two get involved, will it ruin the best relationship in his life?
I am of two minds about this book. On the one hand, it was fast-moving and funny with a satisfying ending. The dialogue crackled and I was never bored. I especially adored the two-narrator setup although I definitely preferred Ally's sensitive intellectual narrations to some of Sam's more boorish comments.
On the other hand, I was uncomfortable with the youth of the characters. They're seniors in high school and I know that it's not really that young of an age to be sexually active. But as I get older, I guess I keep wanting to infantilize those youngins, as I think of them. It would have been so much better for me if it was just a few months later and they had been in college. I just expect college students to be more emotionally prepared as well as overall prepared for any negative consequences. This is very much a personal preference when it comes to books.
Additionally as I hinted at above, I really liked Ally but wasn't as sold on Sam due to his promiscuous lifestyle. He seems to have learned it through observation of his widowed dad but I think Ally could do better. It was definitely helped by the fact that Sam got to share his thoughts, with his changing views on his father playing a pivotal role in his journey, but I still think Sam is dating way out of his league.
Content warning: Language and sexual situations.

Hilarious

I bought this book mainly because I love the author's name - Tellulah Darling. Her author image was pretty nice too, and her writeup about herself got me pretty much hooked. So I wanted to try out one of her books. Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls (that's a mouthful) is her debut novel and her only stand-alone book as of now, and that's why I pretty much chose it.
I will be honest that I was afraid to read this book because it was marked as new adult, and it advertises lots of "bow chicka wow wow." I am happy to say that this isn't one of those books that take a great amount of details on the sex scenes. However, there are a lot of innuendos, strong language, and the like so if that is not your thing, then you might not like this book. I, however, liked it because it just kept on making me laugh.
For me, this book was laugh-out-loud hilarious, which isn't a pretty sight when you're reading on your phone in public. People might think I'm crazy, but I don't care. This book was worth it! I love Tellulah Darling's quirky and witty writing. I love how she plays with language, and uses pop culture references in this book. There is just really a lot of vulgar display and language, but I grew up around a lot of boys so I just learn to laugh at these kinds of things.
This book is filled with teenage angst, where relationships confuse the characters. Should we really bother to form emotional bonds with other people? My answer is yes of course, but I won't tell you what the book has to say~
I think that this is told in two very stereotypical points of view - a very manly man and a very girly girl - in terms of emotions and how they think. Sam is definitely not the kind of guy that I would fall in love with. He's a player who goes for a lot of one-night-stands. He hates the emotional baggage that comes with most girls. He has a lot of personal issues. He's just one of those kinds of guys who think women are crazy. However, he's honest and he's a great best friend, for the most part anyway. He grows along the way despite strongly fighting it. Ally, on the other hand, is the emotional kind of girl despite wanting to be like Sam. She was also the kind that submits to her boyfriend, but she uses that as a motivation to empower herself. She wanted to be reckless after her boyfriend left her for another girl so she went from a sloppy nerd to a hottie. But somewhere along the lines, she finds that she's neither.
I love Sam and Ally's best friend relationship. I can totally see myself in their shoes. They have been together forever and they see each other as brother and sister. They are open with each other about anything that they can go on jokingly insult one another. But they really love each other and care for each other. I love their dynamics with playful banter and pulling pranks on each other. It was definitely fun to read about.
I love the old nosy adults in the diner where Sam and Ally hang out a lot. They had these commentaries about what was going on with Sam and Ally, and they were just really adorable and funny. I think they were my favorite part of the book~
Overall, I love the whole book until the ending. There were some moments that got a little frustrating, but not enough to hate this book. I think I just really wanted things to work out for them. This book mostly won me over for making me laugh so hard, and for making me love the characters that I didn't like in the beginning of the book. Tellulah Darling did not disappoint, and I would consider reading her other books in the future.
