About the Author
Tom Plunkett is a senior consultant with Oracle. He has taught graduate-level computer science courses for Virginia Tech’s computer science department and has authored several books on topics related to Big Data, Cloud Computing, Java, and Service-Oriented Architecture. Tom has spoken internationally at more than 30 conferences and delivered hundreds of presentations worldwide on the subjects of Big Data, Cloud Computing, Java, and Service-Oriented Architecture. Previously, Tom worked for IBM and the United States Government, and practiced patent law for a law firm. He has a B.A. and a J.D. from George Mason University, and a M.S. in Computer Science from Virginia Tech.
TJ Palazzolo is a senior principal curriculum developer with Oracle University. He is the lead curriculum developer for Exalogic Elastic Cloud, WebLogic Server, and Oracle's virtualization products. TJ develops classroom and online training materials on these and other Oracle Fusion Middleware products. He is also responsible for maintaining the Exalogic rack installations used by Oracle University to deliver education. Prior to working for Oracle, TJ created and delivered training on Java and WebLogic for BEA Systems.
Tejas Joshi is a technical director with Oracle Consulting in the UK. He has worked on many high-profile multi-million-dollar solutions during the past fourteen years in both the public and private sectors, drawing recognition from both Oracle and customers through numerous awards including Consultant of the Year 2012 for Western Continental Europe. Tejas is a recognized Oracle design authority for numerous Oracle customers in the UK and represents Oracle on their respective design boards and steering committees, while reporting directly to CxOs of these organizations. He specializes in delivering IT transformation roadmaps for consolidation, cloud computing, and Fusion Applications. Tejas is a frequent and prominent speaker on many events such as Cloud Academy, Oracle Services events, Oracle networking events, and Oracle product launch events. He is a member of a number of strategic programs within Oracle that work on influencing the future directions of the Oracle products and offerings.

Good introduction to Exalogic

This seller responded quickly, provided the book in great condition, no complaints. As for the book itself, it is a good starter for people who are getting involved with Oracle Exalogic, especially in understanding the architecture. This is not what I would categorize an administration guide, but rather meant for someone new to Exalogic.

More Theory, Less Practical Concepts

Except two to three chapters in this book, all other chapters are theoritical and do not add any value to the reader.
I recommend reading Exalogic documentation (Deployment guide and Exalogic cloud guide) rather than buying this book and waste precious time and money.

Great Exalogic introduction

Although I consider myself a "power-user" of the Oracle Engineered Systems (Exadata, Exalogic, Big Data Appliance, etc), I was still learning new things about the Exalogic in every chapter. This book is not intended as a deep technical manual (I think one reviewer was yearning for more practical guidance, but that is not the purpose). Instead this book is an excellent introduction to what makes Exalogic different from other 'converged architecture' solutions and how it can be leveraged in the data center. That is the target audience--people looking for information on the systems that are enabling the cloud and how they fit with existing data centers and applications.
As was pointed out, the information in some sections of this book can be found in other manuals and online destinations, but busy professionals who don't have time to hunt for these "bits and pieces" will appreciate the logical layout and clear discussion of themes. The prose is clear enough for readers who may only be moderately technical, but has enough meat to inform and guide even demanding architects. In fact, by focusing at the higher levels of what makes Exalogic a compelling platform, they authors were able to keep this handbook relevant even through the most recent updates to Exalogic (EECS 2.x+ and Exalogic x3).
In summary, I would recommend this to anyone interested in Oracle's newest technology and strategic direction for enterprise applications. No matter what platform you are currently on or what your future plans are (cloud anyone?), this book is an easy introduction to an important change in technology that promises substantially lower costs and better performance.
