A Great Overview

I love Zelda games. I own and have beaten all 19 canon Zelda games on their original consoles (plus Master Quest, Link's Awakening DX, Hyrule Warriors, etc.). Things tend to blend together for me at this point. This book is a handy summary of all the games, their plots, and their new gimmicks.
I'm a substitute teacher and saw a student buy this at a book fair. That book was about the size of a magazine (but thicker). That spurred me to get a copy from Amazon (at a great price!), which turned out to be pocket-sized and have more content on the non-canon games, like the Satellaview titles, the Japan-only games, the CD-i games, Barcode Battlers, the WarioWare games, etc.).

Just splurge for Hyrule Historia

I picked this up at a Wal-Mart because I had a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket and this was super cheap.
I can tell whoever wrote this does love the Zelda series, but perhaps isn't qualified to write a book about it, much less write a book at all.
The writing in this book is super simple, but not in a "it's easy to understand" way. It doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a book for fans or a book for newcomers to Zelda. Sometimes it will give you details about something it introduces, but sometimes it will casually bring something up that it expects you to already know about.
The details it provides are sparse in some areas that matter, just sort of grazing important details, and then it will bloat some parts needlessly, rephrasing, restating, and reiterating the same points you've read in other sections, or even in that same section.
The book also mixes up it's facts in some areas, or uses facts not considered canon by Nintendo... or worse yet, presents opinions as facts.
The one thing this book has over official Zelda boosk like Hyrule Historia or Art and Artifacts is that it covers many Legend of Zelda spinoffs like Zelda game and watch, Hyrule Warriors and the Tingle games. And it also talks about parts of Legend of Zelda History that Nintendo refuses to acknowledge like the Zelda CD-i games or the Zelda cartoon ( and thankfully the book plays it completely straight instead of playing up the "oh look how terrible these things are" factor )
The Book is also very no-bells and whistles. Plain white paper, no illustrations, just in-game screenshots and a few toy photos.
They only mention Breath of the Wild once and do not talk about the game at all.
I don't recommend this to Zelda fans, nor do I recommend it to newcomers trying to get into the series. Just splurge for Hyrule Historia, or look up whatever you need to know on a Zelda Wiki. I personally don't even know if I want to set this on my Zelda collection shelf.
