Wide-Eyed and Legless: Inside the Tour de France, by Jeff Connor

Named 'The No. 1 Cycling Book of All Time' by Cycle Sport, Wide-Eyed and Legless is a fast-paced, fly-on-the-wall story of courage, endurance, bungling, rows and cheating in sport's greatest marathon.

In 1987, the Tour was won by Irishman Stephen Roche. It was the first time the champion had hailed from outside the Continent or the States and the first time in 20 years a British team - ANC Halfords - had competed in the world's toughest and craziest race. Jeff Connor not only stayed with the British team but also found himself an unofficial team member.

In this new edition of Wide-Eyed and Legless, now widely regarded as a classic, Connor describes what it takes to compete, survive and win during those 26 days of gruelling effort. Alongside the heroism and athleticism, he reveals the extraordinary amounts of chicanery, from pulling riders along to illicit drug use.

Time has not dimmed the impact of this eye-opening and entertaining close-up look at the supreme endurance event, and Wide-Eyed and Legless is destined to be acclaimed by a new generation of cycling enthusiasts.

1987 Seems So Far Away!
By Quaker John
Overall, a decent account of ANC-Halfords muddling through the '87 Tour de France. From the start, Mr. Connor doesn't try to hide the fact that his knowledge of professional cycling was, well to put it nicely, lacking. By the end though I came to appreciate the insights and understandings he gained along the way of accompanying the organizationally-inept ANC-Halfords team. The story of the team is nostalgic because as a fan of the sport, I realize that something like that won't ever be repeated now that the Tour has become a polished, monied, mega-event. Like another reviewer, I wouldn't go so far as to say that this is the greatest cycling book ever written, but even for someone like me who has read just about everything out there, I learned a few things while reading it, and managed a few smiles.

A classic, glimpse into the world of competitive racing - warts and all! A hilarious informed case study of the 1987 Tour.
By AgogoLive
This, I must agree, is a definitive classic on cycle racing. (The only qualification being the prevalence of doping which some in the industry claim is no longer the case due to advancements in detection and vigilance of the ADA. In other word, we hope it isn't like this anymore)

What it offers is an extremely engaging yet richly insightful glimpse into the world of competitive cycling/racing - warts and all! One comes out of it feeling educated and "informed" having been whisked along an intimate tour - in my case as a curious amateur and outsider who has always been trying to get my head around this sport, finally I get it, the intricate ins and outs of the game,... the insider would on the other side of the coin, get a good chuckle out of it in reminiscence and empathy.

Loved the title. Insightful coverage from an honest but hilarious perspective with sometimes shocking revelations about the sport especially of the top-driven cheating (eg the doping, car-hitching, "bribery" and politicking) that goes on inside the Tours.

Although a 2011 edition, the coverage is frozen in time and focused around the 1987 Tour - a salient and comprehensive case study into the "tragicomic" first British (Anglo) Team's debut into the revered Saxon race and its unraveling. In a way it was a post mortem in which there were many lessons to be gleaned and learnt from, making it still relevant today to prep new teams of pitfalls to avoid. The author had, for three short weeks, toured with the British team and managed to capture every subtle nuance of the sport - (as the Foreward of the 2011 edition by Richard Moore, which itself is a must read, puts it so succinctly, that the author's account of the 1987 Tour de France is one fo the most vivid and entertaining books ever written about the Tour de France) - covering the scale, suffering, subterfuge, scandal and general insanity of competitive racing. Cycle Sport names this as the No 1 Cycling Book of All Time (2011).

How naive we'd all been when we watch with wonder the racers' superhuman-prowess during Tour highlights on TV, pedalling day after day. They are...very human...after all.
Highly recommended.

Good but short
By BSL
This is a good book but it left me wanting more. I was surprised just how short this book is. Read it twice? This is not the best cycling book I've ever read (this is how I was drawn to this book by a website ranking).
