Most people experience themselves as two-sided: one side seems mature and stable, the other emotional and impulsive. But have you ever wondered if there really are two minds in each of us? If so, do traumatic as well as ordinary experiences affect the way our minds grow and interact? According to Fredric Schiffer, a leading Harvard psychiatrist and researcher, advances in science prove what many of us have always intuited is true: We are of two minds, each one with a different degree of maturity, and each one associated with the left or the right brain. This brilliant, provocative book illustrates how the interaction of these two minds-- whether they sabotage each other or work in harmony-- actually determines our psychological nature and ultimately the emotional problems or progress we may experience in life. Drawing on his own twenty-five years of research on the brain and behavior, Schiffer gives us overwhelming evidence that each side of our brain possesses an autonomous, distinct personality-- with its own set of memories, motivations, and behaviors. In working with his patients, Schiffer discovered that strategically altering someone's visual field can positively or negatively affect that person's sense of well-being. He shows how using this technique of visual stimulation can activate the specific regions of the brain that harbor both traumatic and joyful memories. This dramatic breakthrough demonstrates how it is possible to access, isolate, and work with the memories encoded on one side of the brain. Dr. Schiffer's dual-brain approach has yielded remarkable results with a wide range of emotional disorders, from anxiety and depression to addiction and stress-induced heart disease-- offering an exciting new perspective on therapy. Just as earlier investigations of the brain and its cognitive functions revolutionized our understanding of how we think, "Of Two Minds" transforms our understanding of how and why we experience emotional distress and conflicts, and suggests a path to a more harmonious, balanced relationship between our two selves.

Ever since Freud, we've known that we share our mental space with another mind, one that may prove quite a hindrance. It can be like a bad roommate we can't evict, leaving dirty dishes in the sink and playing the stereo too loud, and all we can do is try to adjust its excesses with a few carefully worded notes. Dr. Fredric Schiffer believes that he has located the culprit and learned how to talk to it, and his clinical success with problems like cocaine addiction, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder suggest that he's on to something. Of Two Minds is his report from the front.
A psychiatrist affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Schiffer has studied split-brain research and devised his own experiments to show that stress and anxiety are often felt more strongly in one hemisphere than the other. No simple "left brain good, right brain bad" dichotomy, it seems that those who have been affected by emotional trauma lateralize the effects, perhaps in an effort to maintain more-or-less-normal functioning. One hemisphere or the other gets stuck in the past, says Schiffer, and acts out through the patient's symptoms. His goal is integration of these two minds into a kind of team by using clever manipulation of sensory stimuli and other tools of cognitive science.
Of Two Minds is unusual in its acceptance of both scientific and emotional validity. Alternating reviews of the data with often heart-wrenching transcripts of therapy sessions, it offers a two-pronged assault on what seems to be a dual-natured problem. While it might not solve your "roommate problem" overnight, it may start you on the road to reconciliation. --Rob Lightner
From Publishers Weekly
Taking cues from 19th-century English physician Arthur Wigan (whose seemingly normal friend, it turned out when autopsied, had only a single brain hemisphere), contemporary neuroscience asks whether normal people, who possess both left and right brains, can be said to be literally of two minds. Schiffer, an associate attending psychiatrist at McLean Hospital and a Harvard Medical School psychiatry instructor, believes the answer is a resounding yes, and argues that psychiatric disorders are best understood as the unhappy result of two warring brain halves. Transcripts of psychotherapy sessions Schiffer conducted while his patients wore specially designed goggles that allowed them to see out of only one hemisphere at a time support this sci-fi-sounding thesis, as do some?but by no means all?studies pertaining to hemispheric specialization (shifts in ear temperatures, for example, correlate with shifts in EEGs). Unfortunately, while provocative, the patient transcripts, which form the linchpin of the evidence, are bland and curiously unconvincing, and Schiffer's therapy techniques seemingly await further clinical trials. Readers not yet familiar with the famous studies of so-called "split-brain patients"?epilepsy sufferers whose corpora callosa were severed in an experimental therapy technique in the 1960s?may find Schiffer's review of that material, and his reports from his own work with some of those patients, the most interesting portions of the book.

From Library Journal
Drawing on studies in neuroscience, Schiffer (associate attending psychiatrist, McLean Hosp.; psychiatry, Harvard Medical Sch.) has developed a dual-mind hypothesis of mental disorders. According to Schiffer, each side of the brain has a distinct mind or personality with its own memory, emotions, and interpretations. One side of the brain may see the world through a distorted perspective, perpetuating the effects of trauma, while the other side has a more objective memory of the same event. Dual-brain therapy, which combines drugs and psychotherapy, is designed to strengthen the mature side of the brain and get both sides to work together. As an adjunct to diagnosis and treatment, the author uses lateralizing glasses that limit vision to one side, thus activating the opposite side of the brain. This restricted vision often prompts positive or negative emotions in people with psychological disturbances, providing evidence for two minds. Schiffer does not elaborate on neurological studies to support his hypothesis; most of the text describes case studies supporting dual-brain therapy in the treatment of depression, addiction, anxiety, panic, posttraumatic stress, and other mental disorders. An approach to trauma and recovery that deserves to be discussed widely
By David J. Keefe
"Of Two Minds" will be of greatest interest to those struggling with trauma and recovery. Since the publication of the book in 1998, Dr. Schiffer's thesis--i.e., that some of our experiences, particularly traumatic ones, may be sequestered in the non-dominant hemisphere of the cortex--has not been refuted. Dr. Schiffer is a clinician, not an experimental psychologist. In "Of Two Minds" he relates how he arrived at his thesis, and he describes several cases in which his patients achieved stunning breakthroughs by gaining access to their non-dominant hemisphere. The scientific community has now had more than fifteen years to test Dr. Schiffer's findings but mainly ignored them, which is reminiscent of the fact that Oliver Sacks's discoveries concerning the effects of L-DOPA on patients with encephalitis lethargica (described in his book "Awakenings") were ignored by the medical establishment because they didn't fit the accepted model. My guess is that if Dr. Schiffer were wrong about his patients this would long ago have been demonstrated. Schiffer is on the staff of Harvard Medical School; he's not a mere self-promoting quack. Those interested in trauma and recovery should read the book and draw their own conclusions.

Time for a Second (20th Annvrsry) Edition
By Kristen Freed
It's about time for a second (20th anniversary) edition of this book. Also, why is it not on Audible? I want to go on a bike ride and take it with me and the hardcover/kindle editions don't strike me as being very well suited for this purpose. I read a review recently about 3-D movies and why they haven't really taken off. It's the glasses the author argued, no one wants to go out to a movie and put on a pair of goofy looking glasses. In both cases the advice is the same. Do it without the goofy glasses. The material in this book is a difficult enough sell, without the added burden of the glasses. I know it can be done, as I've done it myself, and probably by this point (20 years since the book was first written) so can and does Dr. Schiffer.
"According to Fredric Schiffer, a leading Harvard psychiatrist and researcher, advances in science prove what many of us have always intuited is true: We are of two minds, each associated with either the left or right hemisphere. Drawing on his own twenty-five years of research on the brain and behavior, Schiffer gives us overwhelming evidence that each side of our brain possesses a separate, autonomous, distinct personality, in fact an entire mind of its own, each with its own set of memories, motivations, and behaviors, and each with it's own unique way of looking at life (trees vs. forests, for example). How these two minds interact - whether they dominate/subjugate one another like labor vs. management, or work together in sync with one another like a Forbes Five Star 'One Team, One Hotel' - is what actually determines our psychological nature and ultimately the problems or progress we may experience In life. That relationship and the complex interaction between our two minds is the focus of this book: How to become more aware of and better able to communicate with this 'other' mind (without the use of glasses), to strengthen it, to enlist its cooperation, to help it feel better, and perhaps most importantly, to improve upon the relationship that may or may not exist between them, and build one, if one does not exist," so that we may look upon the world around us as quantum physicists do, seeing not just trees, not just forests, but forests of trees, much like quantum physicists who see not just particles, not just waves, but particle waves. It is for precisely this reason that we have been given this gift, so that we may perceive the duality of our universe just as we see its depth with our two eyes. All of which could be the focus of a second and soon to be 20th anniversary edition of this brilliant, provocative, and underappreciated book.

READING THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE
By Doghead
I have been suffering from mood swings my whole adult life. It affected my wife and my children horribly. I would be fine one second, and then full of rage and frustration the next after the littlest unimportant thing set me off. Then I would feel bad later and go and apologize. Then hours or days later, the same thing would happen, then I am apologizing again. I could never stop it or control it. I felt terrible about doing it. My self esteem was extremely low. I did terrible damage to my relationship with my family.
This book taught me that I had trauma from previous experiences in my life that was causing me to be irritable and angry in an instant. This book taught me to deal with it and heal my 'self', my 'being', my 'inner child' whatever you want to call it. This book radically changed me in about one months time.
I don't yell at my family any more. I have more self esteem. i am not 'set off' by little things any more. I HAVE CONTROL OF MY LIFE AGAIN! Thanks to this book, or more to the point, thanks to Dr. Fredric Schiffer. And thanks to God for giving him the insight to learn all this and put it into book form. If you, or someone you know, suffers from the DR. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde quick change of personality, GET THEM THIS BOOK. Also i would recommend you get the book and read it first or with them. i will never be the same because of this book. Thank you Dr. Schiffer.
